A veteran owned IT company is an information technology firm owned and controlled by one or more U.S. military veterans. In federal buying, that label only matters when it is verified. Self-declared "veteran owned" on a website is not the same as a certification a contracting officer can use.
Here is how the category works, what VOSB and SDVOSB actually mean, and what to check before you put a veteran owned IT company on a contract or a teaming plan.
Veteran Owned vs SDVOSB: The Distinction Buyers Miss
People search "veteran owned IT company" and often mean any of three things.
Veteran-owned as a fact. The founders or owners served. That is real. It is not, by itself, a federal set-aside credential.
VOSB (Veteran-Owned Small Business). Ownership and control by veterans, verified for programs that require it. Useful for some agency and commercial supplier-diversity goals.
SDVOSB (Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business). Ownership and control by one or more service-disabled veterans, verified by the Small Business Administration (SBA). This is the certification that unlocks SDVOSB set-asides and sole-source authority under the Federal Acquisition Regulation.
If your requirement needs a set-aside credit, ask which of those three the firm actually holds. Why Federal Buyers Search for a Veteran Owned IT Company
Contracting officers and primes usually want three outcomes at once.
A socio-economic credit. An award to a verified SDVOSB counts toward agency small business and veteran goals.
A faster path when the rules allow it. Under FAR 19.1406, agencies can award SDVOSB sole-source contracts up to $5 million for non-manufacturing requirements ($8.5 million for manufacturing). That is still a documented award. It is not an open free-for-all.
A delivery partner that owns the outcome. Certification opens the door. On-time hardware, professional services, and clean invoicing keep the relationship.
A veteran owned IT company that also holds 8(a), GSA Multiple Award Schedule (MAS), and overlapping set-asides can satisfy more than one goal on the same paper. That is why buyers search the phrase before they search a company name.
What to Check Before You Award
Do not stop at the homepage badge. Pull these five items.
SAM.gov registration and active certifications. Confirm SDVOSB or VOSB status is current, not expired.
Contract vehicle. Can you order today on GSA MAS, or later on NASA SEWP VI, without standing up a new competition?
Past performance that matches the work. Hardware fulfillment, professional services, training, and logistics are different jobs. Ask for the one you need.
Quality and cyber posture. ISO 9001:2015 and CMMC self-assessment status matter on DoD-adjacent work.
One accountable point of contact. Who picks up when a delivery slips? Name, email, phone.
